Can’t see Springle? It’s probably resting.

Springle stays out of sight until you need it. Here’s how to find it, on a Mac with a notch, a Mac without one, or a second display.

You look at the top of the screen and there’s no Springle. Usually nothing is wrong: Springle shrinks back into the notch while it isn’t helping, so it never covers what you’re working on. Try these in order.

Fixes, quickest first

  1. Point at the island, or press the keys. Rest the pointer on the island at the top of the screen. Or hold ⌃ control ⌥ option to talk, or tap them to type. If you changed the keys in Settings › Shortcuts, use those.
  2. Look on the right display. With more than one display, Springle moves to the display the pointer is on. Move the pointer to the top of the screen you’re using and wait a moment.
  3. Look for the small pill on a screen without a notch. On an external display, or a Mac without a notch, Springle hangs from the middle of the menu bar instead. While it rests, a small pill with its face stays there. Click it to talk.
  4. Check the menu bar. Springle’s face sits in the menu bar while it’s running. If you can’t see it, a crowded menu bar can hide icons behind the notch. Click the desktop so Finder is in front (its menus are short), or quit an app that has its own menu bar icon, and look again. A dashed face means setup isn’t finished: choose Finish Setting Up Springle… in its menu.
  5. Full-screen apps are fine. Springle works over full-screen apps too. Press the keys and it appears at the top.
  6. Open Springle. If its face isn’t in the menu bar at all, Springle isn’t running. Open it from your Applications folder. To have it open by itself, turn on Open Springle when my Mac starts in Settings › General › Starting up.
  7. Quit and reopen it. If the face is there but Springle doesn’t respond, choose Help › Quit and Reopen Springle from its menu.

The keys do nothing at all? Springle needs the Accessibility permission to notice them. If its menu shows Finish Setting Up Springle…, choose it. See Permissions.

What working looks like

The island at rest in the notch, pointer on it
  1. The notebook and the microphone (Talk), on the left.
  2. The middle: the island itself, or Springle’s face on a screen without one.
  3. The keyboard (Type) and Settings, on the right.

Rest the pointer on the island for a moment and it widens sideways, inside the menu bar, with these icons. Move away and it hides again. While you talk or type to Springle, its face and status sit beside the island.

Signed out?

When nobody is signed in, Springle’s menu shows Sign In with Google… instead of the usual items, and pressing the keys asks you to sign in. Sign in and everything comes back.
